Dec 26 - Athenry

We went for a short drive west of us to the town of Athenry.
This is a Dominican Abbey established in 1241. It was closed during the Reformation then destroyed by fire and raids.

This is the Athenry Castle, built sometime before 1240.

On our drive back home, we found another castle, named on the sign above.

The castle, really a Tower House, has been refurbished and is now a restraunt, banquet hall, and hotel. A record of ownership of the tower house has been kept since 1574.

It blows our minds to think of how old Ireland is, especially when compared to the United States!
